What would they do if their jobs were all eliminated overnight? Would they go get a job that will give them a better life? Probably not, because they would have done that already.
Autonomous vehicles will not show up and take over overnight. My prediction will be close to full saturation(in most areas) in ~50 years. Improving the technology, infrastructure and regulatory hurdles will all be rolled out incrementally.
