I think that short concise bytecode is why we have high level languages like javascript to begin with.

By "bytecode" we probably mean "ActionScript" which is a train-wreck of an implementation due to differing bytecode formats internally for various versions of Flash.
Maybe this is why people are terrified of the idea.
