They are testing against E Coli which is an easy target. My understand was always that E Coli is on the order of 1 minute.

If you are into camping you might be thinking of things like Giardia - much harder to kill.



Cl cant kill Giardia oocysts, they have to be filtered out.


Chlorine is effective against Giardia. It requires longer exposure periods generally and can be temp dependent (ie, 1 hr vs 1 minute).


Yes, that's right. Cryptosporidium, another common parasite, is much more resistant to Chlorine
