Ubuntu handles my brightness hotkeys and I keep the brightness pretty low anyway. For latenight I also use the compiz hotkey for negative color windows. (It may have to be enabled, and probably won't work on integrated gfx.) It is Win+N and pages go white on black instantly.

It's not about brightness it's about color temperature.

It's about both in a dark room. Current solution works, and have uninstalled the others. Not to mention, he said it didn't work for him.
