I just got sick of strangers adding me and messaging me but I also found out my ex-boss who I had a great deal of respect for unfriended me on linkedin and lets just say he needs to worry about another competitor SaaS soon.

Yes, I believe a hosted personal site is better, since it's also under my control. Anyone can search your name online and get that as a top hit.

You can delete LinkedIn, but if your profile was public, good luck getting all the data scrapers to remove your data as well.
