Well Balanced also offers a service that some claim is illegal: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5299327

And has yet to offer a response other than "thanks!"

I'm also not sure how many customers Balanced has or what kind of volume they're doing, but I suspect that they're taking o a whole lot of risk with next day payouts that Stripe and Braintree refuse to take on. While some businesses may like this, I find it worrisome.

Square takes on these risks.

Are you saying this service is illegal without the money transmission license?

Yes I am--not to pick on them though. They are one startup of many and if everyone pretends it's not an issue then the law will never get fixed.

Assembly Bill 786 is about to make it a lot worse.

Any shot at hiring female engineers is out the window...

yeah the communal nap area and movie room don't look too attractive...

Actually, I think the "inspiring" (his words) Aston Kutcher poster makes it so the shot at hiring anyone with actual taste is out the window.

It's pretty clearly a joke...

I think they kind of meant it like "We are working so much we do not have time for girls".

Not because of the comment in the video, but because I can't imagine that that startup culture and living/working space would be appealing to any female engineer.

I think it's a bit presumptuous of you to talk on behalf of all female engineers. I know at least two that would not mind living there.

really? interesting...any females on HN that wouldn't mind living there?

Yes, me. Given the right company, I would be all for that. His "Females?! In MY ridiculous hacker house?!" was not a sell, but otherwise I see no problem. That startup culture and that space might not be appealing to you, but please don't speak for all females.

oh... so because you have a patent... it must be REAL technology???

You're drawing conclusions outside of my argument. Please re-read what I wrote.

She said I just don't happen to find photo sharing to be a big problem requiring $41M to solve at the moment. And my comment regarding the patents was based on the $41M investment being in their technology, not a photo sharing app.

I made no other comment on the validity of the patents. I believe the investors based their investment on the underlying technology used to create the app and not the app itself. They valued the technology and the team that created it worthy of a $41M investment.

She's not saying that the idea is wrong in and of itself, but that we should all be focusing on ideas that go beyond sharing photos - solving hard problems.

How many people are willing to pay twice the price of regular cabs - it's not really something I'm interested in splurging for unless it's extremely inconvenient to get a cab where I am.

i'm unsure how the cabs are in san fransisco, but this is a valid concern in nyc where cabs are abundant. i wouldn't pay twice as much when waits are usually nothing to complain about.

@catshirt, what would you pay? how price sensitive do you believe new yorkers are?
